Unemployed woodworker Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread to feed his sister and her children, but is caught and sentenced to five years in prison. He escapes, and is pursued relentlessly by fanatical Inspector Javert. Hugo's novel expresses his humanitarian interest in the suffering of the common people.
